Connections that Transform: Anei Brought Indigenous Coffee Culture to Carnegie Mellon University

Written by Anei Marketing | May 9, 2025 4:55:27 PM

For three days in April, coffee became a bridge between cultures, knowledge, and sustainability in Pittsburgh, United States. ANEI was the centerpiece.

Between April 21 and 23, Anei participated in the Coffee Gatherings organized by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) as part of the "Hospitality and Coffee Break" initiative. This academic and cultural space, promoted by the Departments of History and Design and supported by the Center for Arts and Society, brings together students, researchers, and local roasters to rethink coffee from new perspectives: as a symbol of identity, fair trade, and change.

Anei was invited to share its experience as an Indigenous and peasant organization in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá. During the sessions, we presented our intercultural sustainable development model, based on ancestral wisdom and respect for Mother Earth.

Knowledge that travels, bonds that are born

Each day of the meeting was marked by spaces for dialogue and knowledge exchange. Anei participated in forums, workshops, and tours, generating conversations about Indigenous coffee culture and its impact on social and environmental transformation.

One of the most special moments was the tour of local coffee shops committed to single-origin coffee and traceability: Rockin Cat Café, Boredom Set Café, and De Fer Coffee Roasters. During each visit, we shared the story behind our beans, strengthening partnerships with roasters who value origin and ethics in the coffee supply chain.

Coffee with Conscience: A Workshop to Look Beyond the Cup

During the workshop "Exploring Coffee Consciousness," held at the Margaret Morrison Space, Anei facilitated a discussion on how coffee can be a tool for building community and hospitality. This meeting served to invite participants to see coffee beyond its commercial value, as a living experience that connects territories.

The event concluded with the Spirit of Coffee Festival, held at the Studio for Creative Inquiry, where we shared experiences with students, professors, and stakeholders from the local coffee ecosystem. It was a vibrant space, filled with stories, coffee samples, student projects, and a wealth of human connection.

Coffee as a bridge between cultures

Anei's presence at Carnegie Mellon reaffirms our mission: to sow peace, weave the future in community and harmony with nature, promoting sustainability, conscious, fair, and purposeful trade.
